Cy Young: Zack Braddock wins by a nose over the league leader in wins, Josh Lindblom. Coming back from a foot stress fracture he's posted back-to-back shut outs and been the "spark plug" as manager Phil Garner put it. Cool Stat: He's only allowed 4 hits in his previous 17IP.
MVP: Tie Taylor Teagarden and Carlos Triunfel trade off when it comes to leaders. Batting average to Triunfel, HR total to Teagarden, RBIs to Teagarden and obp to Triunfel. And so on. The truth is with only a 50 point difference in OPS it goes to show you that one needs the other to succeed.
Rookie of the Year: Dai Shima has been just what the doctor ordered. Blowing 7 saves in 9 days late last year killed the Astros late season charge and left the fans demanding upgrade. After signing a slew of free agent arms the 'Stros announced their big prize, flamethrower Dai Shima. He's lived up to his name striking out 35 batters in 26.2IP while going 13 for 17 in saves. He's obviously the reliever of the 1/3 of the year as well.
Now to some musings around the league....
With the biggest name being shopped being displaced 3B Casey McGehee or Kansas City's youngster Tyler Sample the Hot Stove has been rather chilly this year in FCM. Many teams are looking in house and turning to retention before exploring the market.
Sources say the Mets are on the verge of extending David Wright with only 1M annually separating the parties. We've confirmed the total value won't exceed 100M but it should be one of the biggest contracts handed out to a hitter in awhile. Met fans fret as their GM works furiously to get the details hammered out.
Speaking of Houston MVP Taylor Teagarden word has it all discussions are at a standstill and there's no signs of them resuming any time soon. Many are criticizing Houston GM DJ Collora for not getting it done as he's been very public about wanting to lock him up since they acquired him a year ago this day. Teagarden has 2 years remaining in arbitration and will likely earn 7 figures in arbitration this offseason. Both Teagarden and Wright are represented by McInnis & McInnis & McInnis Sporting Agency INC.
Meanwhile over in Newport Beach, CA sources are reporting Boras flew out to Chicago to meet with the Marlin's brass to discuss a potential extension with Brett Anderson. The sticking point seems to be how many years of free agency Anderson is willing to give up in exchange for security. However, it seems Anderson is willing to give a little on his price if he can get a NTC.
Keep your eyes posted and keep your eye's peeled for mid-season awards and more League Musings.
