Today at the all-star game, I had a chance to sit down with gm kirby and get his thoughts on the season so far and the disappointing three game sweep in the Giants series before the break.
J.A. Adande: Well kirby, almost one full season in the books with you as a gm. How does it feel for you and is the team where you want it to be?
Kirby: First off, it's been a great run so far with this team and it's gone by so fast. Feels like yesterday I was unpacking my pictures and setting up my computer in my office. We've had a lot of work to do with this team and I'm happy with what we've done bringing in core guys like Adrian Gonzalez and Francisco Liriano. This team is where I want them to be. Of course I would like them to be in first place heading into the all-star break, but being behind the Giants team only one game back is pretty good. I feel like they will falter and we'll be right there to pass them by. They shouldn't be this good.
J.A. Adande: You kinda segwayed into my next question, Do you feel there is becoming more of a rivalry now between the Giants and LA?
Kirby: There has always been that little bit of a rivalry between us, but yes. I think it is becoming more hatred between the actual teams. Before it was just the fans.
J.A. Adande: Last weekend, some of the players made a notable prediction. Quote from Adrian Gonzalez "We will make the playoffs and the Giants won't be anywhere near it." What are your thoughts on this?
Kirby: I think it's fine. Adrian was just trying to rally his guys for the series and it didn't work the way he wanted it, but it's just part of the game. You'll always have players saying this stuff and with media now a days it's hard to avoid it now. Plus it's fun for the fans to watch this.
J.A. Adande: Wow, you keep segwaying into my questions. Next one, your fans have been the best in baseball, averaging 56,000 per game. What do you think of this and what is the reason why?
Kirby: Well, two things, the product on the field, and the ticket prices. We have the lowest ticket prices in the mlb. We want to make this a family fun enviroment. I don't believe in skyrocketing ticket prices. What's the point? The game is for the fans and for us guys who have nothing better to do. It should be fun, not all about business. My thought on it, even as a kid, was that this game is for fun if you keep worrying about the business side of it, you'll lose the fun part. The other thing I mentioned was the product on the field. We have a great team. Third best record in all of baseball. We are known for putting the best on the field and that's what intend to do year in and year out. It's paid off this year.
J.A. Adande: C.J. Wilson, who's at the all star game here tonight, is in the hunt for they Cy Young award. Do you think he should and will get it?
Kirby: Of course I think he should get it. He's been a great teamate to have here in L.A. A class act on and off the field. He's been pitching outstanding all year long. Signing him to that three year deal last year, made me look like a genious. Now will he win it? That's a different story. He has three guys in front of him that have been pitching will all year long. 2 of them are in our division. If I had to choose the winner right now, I would say Jerry Sullivan from San Diego. He's been lights out all year long on an average at best team. Should be a fun race to watch.
J.A. Adande: Well, alright that's all for now. Anything else to say kirby?
Kirby: Think that's about it. Looking forward to getting back to play on Friday against the Padres and continuing the race with the Giants. Can't wait for the deadline to pass. Less work for me, than I can get back to what I enjoy doing the most. Watching good baseball. Also, message to Scotty, great job with putting the Giants together. I for the life of me, can't figure out how they're doing it. Must have good chemistry on the team. Anyway, enough Minnesota nice, here that Scotty, that's the sound of a train falling off the tracks. Run's over buddy.
That's all of the interview.
P.S. in case you didn't know, kirby's from Minnesota, hence Minnesota nice. Just thought I throw that in there.
Video I found that kirby might like.
