Wright was the highly sought after free agent during the 2022-23 winter in which he didn't actually sign until mid-April as teams continued to court him. He left St. Louis with 3.53 ERA and 47-36 record. To many it was a surprise to see him hit the open market since the Cardinals still had three years of team control (via arbitration) left.
While in Beantown, Pat Wright has not been the same. He did have a fine showing in 2023, possibly his best overall sabermetric season. However, he quickly struggled thereafter and has a 4.82 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 111 Games with the Red Sox. Though his DICE has been very solid at 3.74 and a good 0.91 HR/9.
The question is, "does his lack of performance have to do with a lack of supporting cast or lost talents?" The fact that Boston is rebuilding and on pace for its fourth straight ninety-plus loss season could be a large factor. But scouts have also remarked in recent years Wright's change-up and curveball have been less deceptive as they were from '19 to '23.
This will be interesting to see how this plays out. Coors field isn't exactly where you want to go to straighten out pitching problems. GM Matty Nokes has been known to get the most out of his players and it's possible winning will cure Wright's ailments.
