As we head into the off-season, General Managers are already assessing their organizations. "Who do I re-sign?", "Who is my next big up-and-coming prospect?", "Who do I trade?" These are some of the questions each GM asks himself (minus the prospect question, for Baltimore). Today we look through the Mariners.
- Who do they re-sign? - Ray Wunderlich: The Wonder Boy has been with GM Matty Nokes for quite some time and we highly doubt Nokes would trade for him just to be a rental. Our guess is that he's signs for 7-8M per for 1 or 2 years.
- Who don't they re-sign? - Nat Fischer, Frank Mason, Nick Macnish, Gary Gaskins, and Brian Nelson: We would be surprised if any of these guys are retained. Mason and Gaskins were clearly rental pick-ups while Nelson probably isn't worth re-signing right away. That leaves Fischer and Macnish. Both are probably going to get fallback arbitration offers. Macnish is a no-brainer and could be one of the highest sought after free agents. Fischer is risky, but at Type B he could make sense for a team in need of a short-term solution behind the dish. He struggled offensively, but he picked things up defensively and could be a good low risk addition.
- Who are their big up-and-coming prospects? - Scott Glass, Michael Lander, Bradley Lamp, Jason Greene, Neville Sheldon, and Craig Luttrell: It's a laundry list and most could make an impact in 2045. By all accounts, Greene is expected to get one of the rotation spots next spring, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal II reports. Lamp struggled when given a chance this season, but Seattle is still very excited for the 20-year old's future. Glass, is the future at catcher, but will probably only see a cup of coffee at most in '45. Lander and Luttrell could see time at some point during the next campaign, blogs Nick Eaton of seattlepi.com. Sheldon is our dark horse candidate to make some noise this season. He's quietly made a great transition to starter and possibly projects in the Mariners' rotation long-term. He could be used as a swing man and even has a decent chance of making the roster out of camp.
- Who do they trade? - Manny Pena, Andrew Meredith, Rich McPetrie, Travis Winfrey, and Matthew Kallen: Seattle has a ton of outfield depth all throughout the system, so someone's gotta go. Pitching depth is loaded as well, so expect Meredith to be aggressively shopped this off-season. McPetrie could take Meredith's spot in the rotation, but expect prospect Sheldon to get first dibs, writes Greg Johns of MLB.com. Winfrey could be groomed into a future closer or even stretched out to a starter, which makes him a valuable trade chip to re-stock the system. Kallen is a quality reliever, but doesn't stand much of a chance making an impact in the Mariners 2045 bullpen. Bob Dutton Jr of the Tacoma News Tribune suggests that prospects Rico Colomes and Lee Brownell could also be dealt this off-season as they're blocked.
