The Rays announced the team has a new manager this afternoon effective immediately.
Former manager, Evan Longoria, stepped down from the position late Tuesday night for unknown reasons.
That left a whole in a very key spot on the team and the team needed to find a manager quickly. St. Petersburg native Casey Kotchman is tabbed as the new manager of the Tampa Bay Rays. Casey becomes the first ever manager to manage his hometown team in the big leagues.
"I'm excited for this opportunity," said Casey. "We have a long road ahead of us to get back to a playoff team, but we have the pieces here and I have confidence in the management and ownership to help us get there."
Coming off of their first ever sweep of the Marlins in franchise history in June, the Rays have shown flashes of what they could be.
"That weekend was a very good indicator of what this team could be," said Casey. "All this team needs is time and maybe a few extra pieces, but the Rays will be a force to be reckoned with in a few years."
