Donovan Pace has started 600 games in FCM. He has won 344 times. He's also started 44 postseason games and won 18. 4000+ strikeouts, 98 complete games, and 72 shutouts....but not until his 19th season in the league did he have the privilege of October 29th.
Likewise, Corey Bosworth has started 437 games. Won 246 of them. 40 postseason starts with 16 wins. Nearly 3000 innings, 4 Cy Youngs, and 9 all-star appearances but never was his mound opponent the one he faced off with on October 29th.
The recipe for an epic.....miserably failed to live up to the hype. In a tight series in which Florida outscored Toronto 22-13 and still lost in 6 games, one of the clunkers of the series was this matchup for the ages. Two of FCMs living legends in the twilight of their career in the House that Pace built. But the game was over by the fourth inning when Corey Bosworth took the hill with a 2-0 lead.
The Jays had scored in the first when all-world slugger Sean Vogel homered off the legendary Pace. They scored again in the second on a base-hit by Jose Vargas, a stolen base, and a clutch hit from grizzled Blue Jay veteran Mike Vanner.
That 2-0 lead didn't last when Eric Olson and Kenny Harter started the inning with singles. Youngster Jeff Jewett stepped to the plate and delivered a crushing blow, homering off of Bos and turning the score around. Theo Curry followed that up with another single and the writing was on the wall. One of the most exciting matchups in FCM history ended with a dud.
The Fish went on to add 6 more runs to their 3-2 lead and Pace finished off a 3 hitter, never allowing the Blue Jays another chance in the game.
