Rays Make 3 Moves at Deadline; "Done Dealin'"

Today's trade deadline day for the 30 teams and the Rays were one of the teams dealing.

The Rays made three moves this week, none involving anyone on the current major league roster. Rays dealt outfielder Marshall Moore, pitcher Sean Pebbles, and top minor league catcher Tim Angermeier, who was pulled in the sixth inning of yesterday's game between the Indianapolis Indians. Oddly enough, that happens to be the same team that Tim will report to this afternoon when the Indians and the Bulls play the final game of a three game set.

"I knew what was happening when the manager came over and talked to me," Tim said after the game.
"I kinda had a feeling one of us catchers was going to be moved. It'll be different tomorrow night that's for sure. I spent parts of three seasons with this team. I can't wait to start this new chapter and I hope to be playing against some of these guys in the majors some day."

Tim will most likely get that chance if he stays with Baltimore who is in the same division as Tampa.

In return for Tim, the Rays got 21 year old RP Dave Nichols. Dave was on the O's A team (Aberdeen Ironbirds) and will report to the Vero Beach Rays (Rays A team) later today. Nichols had an ERA of 3.36 with the Ironbirds.

"We really like this kid," said Kirby on Nichols. "He has a shot to be a set up man, if not closer, for us one day. You hate to give up a guy like Tim, but we felt this would make our future better. We wish Tim good luck with Baltimore and we hope to see him at Tropicana one day."

The Rays also acquired pitchers Gary Cusack and Jared Sampson for Pebbles. Also third baseman Marcus Sanchez for outfielder Marshall Moore. Gary and Marcus will report to Durham. Sampson to Montgomery (Rays AA club).

The Rays appear to be done dealing but anything can change. Wednesday, I got the sense the Rays wouldn't make any moves, but they made three yesterday.

The Rays continue their series at Toronto tonight. Game time is 3:55. Tune into Suns TV.

The Rays will return home on Monday, August 2nd to take on the Boston Red Sox at 7:05. Michael Autrey has been recalled and is scheduled to start that game.
